Hello once again,

For this article we will talk about the importance of vitamins, their definition biology, how many they are and what vitamins exist? Also, what types or categories of vitamins exist? So, let's begin.

What are the VITAMINS?

First of all. Vitamins are organic compounds, important and necessary for all humans and other animals on this planet. The intake of vitamins is mostly about food and they have no caloric value, in contrast to fat, carbohydrates or proteins.

Biological importance of vitamins & vitamins definition biology

As before mentioned vitamins are important and necessary for humans. Lack of vitamins can lead to significant impairment of our entire organism, so it is important to receive vitamins daily from food. The vitamins are involved in energy, transport and metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats that we receive from the food that we are eating every day.

What we need to emphasize and keep, is that the partial or total lack of vitamins in our body can cause several damages and pathologies. With few words, we need to get the necessary amounts of each vitamin to ensure that our organism will work properly. Also, it is not only the lack of which must be concerned, damage may also occur from the large intake of vitamins (hypervitaminosis).

What are the categories of vitamins?

Vitamins are divided into 3 categories:

  1. Water soluble vitamins
  2. Fatsoluble vitamins
  3. Antioxidantsoluble vitamins

The water-soluble vitamins are vitamin C and the group of B vitamins. These vitamins are absorbed and stored by our body. More specifically, they dissolve in water (each one of them with a different degree hemo-) and immediately absorbed from the gut and then they are stored in the several tissues of our body.

The fat soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E and K and they mainly depend on the number of fat we take from our diet daily. The specificity of these vitamins is that not all of them are recruited from food, but the body can synthesize some of them.

What must be mentioned is that these types of vitamins can never be expelled from our organism and always will be stored, unlike vitamins from other categories. That means that their excessive intake can create various problems with the functionality of our body.

As for antioxidant vitamins, what is worth mentioning is that they shield our body and reinforcing the immune system.

How many VITAMINS are and which are they?

There is a total of 13 vitamins and they are all necessary for our body, others in small amounts and others in bigger amounts. Let us mention the full vitamin list A-Z, one by one:
